Are the dirt roads actually roads, or more like trails to get back somewhere off the actual road, like to the mines or whatever?

They are roads, some are gravel, some just compacted dirt. North of the wheat belt, which is most of the state, only the two north south highways and a couple of connecting roads are bitumen.

Oh, wow, that’s interesting to think about. Everything is paved over in the U.S. because we’re so obsessed with cars, the freedom of cars, and the independence we associate with cars. We’ll drive across the several states because “it’s only 11 hours” instead of flying.

Every time I cross the Tropic of Capricorn, it occurs to me that if you drove (a 4wd) along it west to east across the continent you could go 4,000 km and cross 3 bitumen roads – 2 in Western Australia and one in the Northern Territory before you got to central Queensland. And along a rough centre line south to north, in 3000 km you would only cross two.

        That is an intimidating prospect.
